Flowering Quince Questions?

does anyone know much about this species. i've heard good and bad about it but the flowers are so pretty i am thinking about planting it. wondering about your experiences. also wondering what zones it is hardy to, i live in zone 5.

Flowering Quince Questions?
I have 2 of these bushes...and I love them. I live in zone 7 (Indiana, US) and mine are fine. They lose their leaves in the winter but in Spring the new leaves are reddish, then comes the profuse red blooms. Hummingbirds are very attracted to flowering quince. And many of my other birds spend time in the quince bushes cleaning their beaks. They do not produce fruit, though...they are ornamental only. Plant yours in full sun, if possible. It will do best there.

Watch out for thorns, though, if you prune.

They make great hedge rows or single plantings.

I hope I've helped.
Reply:I lived 25 years where winter was very cold and summer quite hot, and the quince grows well. I saw also that in zone 24 %26amp; 25 etc. it drow well. So in your zone 5 I think it is not question that not grow, if you care well?

Some one told me that quince can be grafted with different trees. And I tried the apple and it takes, but for 2 years it seems me that not develop enough, and for some reason I could not try longer.

So to graft a young tree near ground, I think is good, (to save it), and lay to make own roots of these varieties you want it.

Fruits of quince should be baked or cooked, otherway not taste good. To put one into clothes closet, it smells good!
Reply:Hi Lola

I too live in Zone 5 and I've had a FQ for many years. The only problems I've ever had with it is that sometimes a main stem will die back and have to be cut off at ground level...but this is a faily common thing with shrubs of all kinds.

You are correct, the flowers are spectacular! Put your quince in full sun, and wait for the show next spring! :)
